In this fast paced, digital world, keeping everything on our devices seems like the most practical and convenient way of life. Got a dentist appointment? Set a reminder using Google calendar. Want to take some notes? Open up the notes app on your phone and get typing! More and more people have moved away from paper and operate strictly electronically. But when it comes to journaling, what medium will produce the best outcome for you? analogue journaling or digital journaling? Both mediums can offer you a different experience in your journaling journey. Let’s get into it.

Analogue Journaling

Let’s start with something more traditional, analogue journaling

Analogue journaling is the classic method of journaling where we reconnect with the good old pen and paper. This timeless practice is all about expressing yourself and reflecting on your life – jotting down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with every stroke of your pen and flip of your pages.

This is what make analogue journaling special. It is hands-on and intimate. You get to feel the paper beneath your fingers and see your words come to life on the page. Plus, as some studies have shown, that the act of physically writing can boost your memory and help you understand yourself better. It helps to engage your mind better.

There are many choices when it comes to analogue journaling. There are different styles, like bullet journals, art journals, gratitude journals, and travel journals. Each one lets you express yourself in a unique way. You can read more about these on our blog.

Digital Journaling

Digital journaling, as opposed to the traditional pen-and-paper approach, brings numerous benefits to the table. You can choose from various digital tools such as apps like Good Notes or opt for familiar word-processing software like Microsoft Word or Google Docs to cater to your specific journaling needs. One of the standout advantages of digital journaling is its paperless nature, making it an excellent choice for those aiming to reduce clutter and environmental impact. We will always advocate for more sustainable alternatives on this blog.

For those of us with less than desirable handwriting, digital journals ensure enhanced readability. This also means it offers convenience for those who struggle with spelling and grammar. Your entries remain legible and free from errors, making them effortless to revisit and comprehend.

Additionally, digital journaling allows you to effortlessly integrate multimedia elements into your entries. Whether you want to insert photos, videos, links to web pages, or articles, your digital journal can become a multimedia-rich reflection of your experiences. Though, I personally find it quite enjoyable decorating the pages of a paper based journal. Just hearing the pages crumple whilst doing it is the perfect ASMR.

Lastly, digital journaling is incredibly efficient when it comes to searching for specific entries or topics. Apps like Day One offer a search function, allowing you to quickly locate the exact content you’re looking for. This streamlined searchability saves you valuable time compared to flipping through numerous paper notebooks in search of a particular entry or insight.

In essence, digital journaling offers a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional journaling, combining convenience and organisation while reducing clutter and environmental impact. However, nothing can quite replace the personal, first-hand experience that the traditional analogue method can offer, in our opinion. Sometimes, we need to take a break from our devices and page through a book or two without any distractions in our midst.
